Self-employed translators have a plethora of invisible colleagues. For us, working at home (read: working alone) is more the rule rather than the exception. This is why we create groups of colleagues to also be able to tap into the knowledge of fellow sector professionals. And just as important is to be able to brainstorm while savouring a chosen cup of tea or coffee. On one such platform the idea was floated to pool the knowledge and expertise of a number of medical translators under one denominator. This blossomed to become a group of self-employed translators prepared to join together in assembling a translation memory for the benefit of its clients - a group of translators with a shared specialised field, of different nationalities, enjoying direct lines of communication with an established community, but who all based on their own agenda and skills can themselves decide whether or not to accept an assignment. We put our ideas to each other for the translation of a specific term as necessary. We work together on ensuring an end product with the appropriate tone, the correct terminology, and one that is fitting for the relative target group. Zelfstandig vertalers hebben veel onzichtbare collega’s. Thuiswerken (lees: alleen werken) is voor ons doorgaans meer regel dan uitzondering. Wij zetten daarom collegiale groepen op, zodat wij ook kunnen sparren met vakgenoten. En, wat minstens zo belangrijk is, kunnen brainstormen onder het genot van een kop koffie of thee. Op een van deze platformen werd het idee geopperd om de kennis en expertise van een aantal medisch vertalers onder één noemer te bundelen. Een groep zelfstandige vertalers die bereid is om samen een vertaalgeheugen op te bouwen waar klanten profijt van hebben. Een groep vertalers met een gezamenlijk vakgebied en verschillende nationaliteiten die terug kunnen vallen op korte lijntjes en een vaste achterban, maar die allemaal op basis van hun eigen agenda en vaardigheden zelf kunnen bepalen of ze een opdracht aannemen. We leggen onze ideeën aan elkaar voor over de vertaling van een bepaald begrip. Samen werken we aan een eindproduct dat de juiste toon treft, de juiste terminologie bevat en de juiste doelgroep aanspreekt. Les traducteurs indépendants s’entourent de nombreux collègues qui, la plupart du temps, restent invisibles.
